MODEL

Pronoun + Predicate; Pronoun + 们 (plural)

Read the structure

Mandarin personal pronouns normally occupy the same subject or object positions as names. 我 and 你 refer to speaker and listener; 他 and 她 differ in writing but sound alike. Add 们 to human pronouns for a definite group, rather than attaching it freely to ordinary nouns. Keep the model Pronoun + Predicate; Pronoun + 们 (plural) visible while you compare each sentence.

我们是学生。

We are students.

Choose the right context

Use 我, 你, 他, or 她 before a predicate to identify its subject. Place a pronoun after a transitive verb when it is the object. Add 们 to a personal pronoun when referring to a known plural group.

她喜欢喝茶。

She likes drinking tea.

Respect the boundary

Do not add 们 to a pronoun that already denotes a plural group. Do not use 她 for a male referent in writing, although it sounds like 他. Do not move an object pronoun before an ordinary verb without a licensed construction.

老师认识们他。

(The teacher knows them.)

Repair the pattern

Plural suffix placed before its pronoun: Plural suffix 们 must follow its human pronoun as 他们; it cannot precede the pronoun. Plural suffix repeated: 们 marks the pronoun as plural once; repeating it cannot create an additional plural meaning.

老师认识他们。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

老师认识们他。

老师认识他们。

Plural suffix placed before its pronoun

Plural suffix 们 must follow its human pronoun as 他们; it cannot precede the pronoun.

我们们去学校。

我们去学校。

Plural suffix repeated

们 marks the pronoun as plural once; repeating it cannot create an additional plural meaning.

老师认识们他。

lǎo shī rèn shi men tā 。

Plural suffix 们 must follow its human pronoun as 他们; it cannot precede the pronoun.

我们们去学校。

wǒ men men qù xué xiào 。

们 marks the pronoun as plural once; repeating it cannot create an additional plural meaning.

06 / PRACTICE

08 / QUESTIONS

Basic Personal Pronouns Questions

Do 他 and 她 sound different?

No. Both are pronounced tā; the gender distinction appears only in writing.

Can a subject pronoun be omitted?

Yes, when the conversation makes the referent unmistakable. Beginners should keep it when omission would be unclear.
