MODEL

Lexical base + suffix → established noun, localizer, or plural human expression

Read the structure

These suffixes form established words or limited grammatical forms. -家 can label a specialist, -们 marks a definite human plural, and -儿, -头, and -子 form lexical nouns or localizers in conventional combinations. They attach directly to the base, but they are not freely interchangeable or productive with every noun. Keep the model Lexical base + suffix → established noun, localizer, or plural human expression visible while you compare each sentence.

朋友们都来了。

The friends all came.

Choose the right context

Recognize established words such as 画儿, 画家, 石头, 里头, and 瓶子. Use -们 with human pronouns or definite human nouns when plural marking is useful. Keep a suffix directly attached to its lexical base.

她是一位画家。

She is a painter.

Respect the boundary

Do not add -们 after a number-classifier phrase. Do not reverse the base and suffix. Do not create new combinations merely because a suffix meaning seems suitable.

三个老师们来了。

(Three teachers came.)

Repair the pattern

Plural -们 follows an explicit counted phrase: An explicit number-classifier phrase already gives the plural count and does not take -们. The specialist suffix is placed before its base: -家 follows the field or activity base in established specialist nouns such as 画家.

三个老师来了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

08 / QUESTIONS

Common Noun Suffixes -儿, -家, -们, -头, and -子 Questions

Does every plural human noun need -们?

No. Chinese nouns can be number-neutral. -们 is most natural with pronouns or definite human groups when plurality is relevant.

Is -儿 always the same as erhua pronunciation?

Not in every analysis. This page follows the official suffix inventory and teaches established forms rather than a rule licensing free attachment.
