The Pronoun 人家 in Chinese

人家 rén jia

人家 can refer to another person or group already identifiable in context, often with a mildly evaluative tone, and in informal speech it can also refer coyly to the speaker. MODEL

人家 + Predicate; Verb + 人家

Read the structure

人家 can refer to another person or group already identifiable in context, often with a mildly evaluative tone, and in informal speech it can also refer coyly to the speaker. It fills an ordinary noun-phrase slot, so its referent comes from context while its subject or object position remains grammatically explicit. Keep the model 人家 + Predicate; Verb + 人家 visible while you compare each sentence.

人家已经道过歉了。

They have already apologized.

Choose the right context

Use 人家 as the subject when referring to a contextually identified person. Use 人家 as an object after a verb or preposition. Use speaker-referring 人家 only in an appropriate playful or coy register.

别总打断人家。

Do not keep interrupting them.

Respect the boundary

Do not place aspect marking inside 人家 as though it were a verb phrase. Do not add a classifier between 人 and 家 in this fixed pronoun. Do not assume 人家 always means the speaker; context normally supplies another referent.

人个家已经道歉了。

(They have already apologized.)

Repair the pattern

Classifier splits the fixed pronoun: 人家 is an indivisible pronoun here; 个 cannot be inserted between its two characters. Perfective marker splits the pronoun: Object pronoun 人家 must remain intact; perfective 了 cannot occur inside a noun phrase.

人家已经道歉了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
