Basic Subject-Verb-Object Order in Chinese
动词谓语句
The unmarked Mandarin action clause places the subject before the verb and a nominal object after it. Time and manner material may be added in their own preverbal positions, but they do not reverse the verb-object core. This pattern is the safest starting point when no special construction is required.

MODEL
Subject + (Adverb) + Verb + Object
Read the structure
The unmarked Mandarin action clause places the subject before the verb and a nominal object after it. Time and manner material may be added in their own preverbal positions, but they do not reverse the verb-object core. This pattern is the safest starting point when no special construction is required. Keep the model Subject + (Adverb) + Verb + Object visible while you compare each sentence.
我喜欢这本书。
I like this book.
Choose the right context
State a straightforward action with an expressed subject and object. Keep a preverbal adverb between the subject and verb. Use the pattern as the default when the object needs no special focus or disposal meaning.
他马上喝水。
He will drink water right away.
Respect the boundary
Do not copy English question inversion into a Mandarin statement. Do not place the ordinary object before the verb without a topic or 把 construction. Do not put a time adverb between the verb and its object.
我喜欢这本书喜欢。
(I like this book.)
Repair the pattern
Transitive verb repeated after its object: The SVO clause is complete after 喜欢这本书; repeating the same transitive verb without another object is malformed. Adverb splits verb and object: 马上 modifies the whole drinking event and belongs before the verb; 喝 and its object 水 stay together.

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with 动词谓语句.
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with 动词谓语句. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
Basic Subject-Verb-Object Order Questions
Is Mandarin always SVO?
No. Topics, 把, passives, and omitted arguments create other surface orders.
Where does a time word go?
It normally appears before the verb, either before or after the subject depending on its scope.
