Recoverable Subject and Object Ellipsis in Chinese
省略主语或宾语
Mandarin may omit a subject or object when the missing referent is recoverable from the same sentence, an adjacent sentence, or the shared situation. Ellipsis avoids unnecessary repetition but does not erase the underlying participant. If more than one referent fits or the omission changes interpretation, an explicit noun phrase or pronoun is safer.

MODEL
Context + Ø Subject/Ø Object + Predicate
Read the structure
Mandarin may omit a subject or object when the missing referent is recoverable from the same sentence, an adjacent sentence, or the shared situation. Ellipsis avoids unnecessary repetition but does not erase the underlying participant. If more than one referent fits or the omission changes interpretation, an explicit noun phrase or pronoun is safer. Keep the model Context + Ø Subject/Ø Object + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
我决定出国留学,不得不和父母告别。
I decided to study abroad and had to say goodbye to my parents.
Choose the right context
Omit a repeated subject when the previous clause clearly establishes the same actor. Omit an object already active and uniquely identifiable in the conversation. Retain enough surrounding context for the listener to recover the missing participant.
这本书我看过了,不想再看。
I have read this book and do not want to read it again.
Respect the boundary
Do not omit a participant when several antecedents remain possible. Do not assume every missing noun phrase refers to the nearest noun. Do not use ellipsis where it changes who performed or received the action.
我决定出国留学,我和不得不父母告别。
(I decided abroad study, I with had-to parents say goodbye.)
Repair the pattern
The modal sequence is scrambled: The recoverable subject may be omitted, but 不得不 must precede the complete 和父母告别 predicate. The time phrase is split by the object: Ellipsis does not license inserting a repeated demonstrative inside the fixed time phrase 短时间内.
我决定出国留学,不得不和父母告别。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Recoverable Subject and Object Ellipsis Questions
Can Mandarin omit any subject that was mentioned earlier?
No. The intended referent must remain readily recoverable and unambiguous. Otherwise the noun phrase or pronoun should be repeated.
Is an omitted object grammatically absent forever?
No. Its interpretation is supplied by discourse or the shared situation. Ellipsis reduces repetition rather than removing the participant from meaning.
