01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 看上去 + Adjective / Clause

Read the structure

看上去 presents how someone or something looks from the speaker's visual impression. The fixed expression stays together before an adjective or descriptive clause. Although it contains a directional element, its appearance use does not allow a degree word inside the expression or an aspect particle directly after it. Keep the model Subject + 看上去 + Adjective / Clause visible while you compare each sentence.

这件衣服看上去很不错。

This item of clothing looks quite good.

Choose the right context

Describe a visual impression: 沙发看上去很结实。 Offer a tentative evaluation based on appearance. Use it before an adjective or short descriptive clause.

那张沙发看上去非常结实。

That sofa looks very sturdy.

Respect the boundary

Do not split 看上去 with the description. Do not attach 了 to it in the appearance construction. Do not use it for a conclusion with no perceptual basis.

沙发看上很结实去。

(The sofa look-up very sturdy-go.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed expression is split: 看上去 must remain a fixed unit before the description 很结实. 了 splits the degree phrase: 很紧张 is one degree phrase and cannot be split by the aspect particle 了.

沙发看上去很结实。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
