Adjective Reduplication: AA and AABB in Chinese

形容词重叠 xíngróngcí chóngdié

Reduplicating a suitable adjective gives a vivid, descriptive quality rather than simply increasing its degree. Many one-syllable adjectives use AA, while many descriptive two-syllable adjectives use AABB. A reduplicated form can modify a noun with 的, describe a state, or modify an action with 地.

MODEL

A → AA; AB → AABB (+ 的 / 地)

Read the structure

Reduplicating a suitable adjective gives a vivid, descriptive quality rather than simply increasing its degree. Many one-syllable adjectives use AA, while many descriptive two-syllable adjectives use AABB. A reduplicated form can modify a noun with 的, describe a state, or modify an action with 地. Keep the model A → AA; AB → AABB (+ 的 / 地) visible while you compare each sentence.

她穿着一条长长的裙子。

She is wearing a long, flowing skirt.

Choose the right context

Give a noun a vivid quality: 她穿着一条长长的裙子。 Describe the resulting appearance of something: 房间收拾得干干净净。 Describe how an action is performed: 孩子们高高兴兴地回家了。

房间收拾得干干净净。

The room has been made thoroughly clean and tidy.

Respect the boundary

Do not add 很 before a reduplicated descriptive adjective as though it were an ordinary degree predicate. Do not assume every two-syllable adjective permits AABB reduplication; the pattern is lexically restricted. Do not use ABAB when the intended adjectival pattern is AABB, such as 干干净净.

这个房间很干干净净。

(This room is very clean-clean-tidy-tidy.)

Repair the pattern

A degree adverb is added before an already reduplicated descriptive form: 干干净净 is already a reduplicated descriptive form; 很 cannot be placed directly before it as an additional degree marker. A two-syllable adjective is repeated as ABAB instead of the required AABB pattern: The adjectival reduplication of 高兴 uses AABB: 高高兴兴. ABAB does not form the intended descriptive adjective here.

这个房间干干净净的。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

She is wearing a long, flowing skirt.

房间收拾得干干净净。

Fángjiān shōushi de gāngānjìngjìng.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Give a noun a vivid quality: 她穿着一条长长的裙子。
  • Describe the resulting appearance of something: 房间收拾得干干净净。
  • Describe how an action is performed: 孩子们高高兴兴地回家了。

Do not use it when

  • Do not add 很 before a reduplicated descriptive adjective as though it were an ordinary degree predicate.
  • Do not assume every two-syllable adjective permits AABB reduplication; the pattern is lexically restricted.
  • Do not use ABAB when the intended adjectival pattern is AABB, such as 干干净净.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

这个房间很干干净净。

这个房间干干净净的。

A degree adverb is added before an already reduplicated descriptive form

干干净净 is already a reduplicated descriptive form; 很 cannot be placed directly before it as an additional degree marker.

她高兴高兴地回家了。

她高高兴兴地回家了。

A two-syllable adjective is repeated as ABAB instead of the required AABB pattern

The adjectival reduplication of 高兴 uses AABB: 高高兴兴. ABAB does not form the intended descriptive adjective here.

这个房间很干干净净。

Zhège fángjiān hěn gāngānjìngjìng.

干干净净 is already a reduplicated descriptive form; 很 cannot be placed directly before it as an additional degree marker.

她高兴高兴地回家了。

Tā gāoxìng gāoxìng de huí jiā le.

The adjectival reduplication of 高兴 uses AABB: 高高兴兴. ABAB does not form the intended descriptive adjective here.

08 / QUESTIONS

Adjective Reduplication: AA and AABB Questions

Does adjective reduplication simply mean very?

No. It normally makes a quality more vivid or descriptive. It is not a mechanical replacement for 很 or 非常.

Can every Chinese adjective be reduplicated?

No. Reduplication depends on the adjective and the intended function. Learn common forms as established patterns.
