01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 仿佛 + Clause / Noun + 似的

Read the structure

仿佛 introduces an impression or comparison that something seems as if it were true. It can precede a clause or pair with 似的 after the comparison. It is a stance adverb, so it cannot take aspect marking or be placed after the proposition it evaluates. Keep the model Subject + 仿佛 + Clause / Noun + 似的 visible while you compare each sentence.

奶奶仿佛回到了童年,开心地笑了。

Grandmother seemed to return to her childhood and smiled happily.

Choose the right context

Present a vivid as-if comparison. Describe an uncertain visual or emotional impression. Pair with 似的 when explicitly comparing one entity to another.

他仿佛没有听见我的问题。

He seemed not to have heard my question.

Respect the boundary

Do not use it to assert confirmed fact without comparison. Do not attach 了 to 仿佛. Do not place it after the clause it evaluates.

他仿佛了没有听见。

(He seemingly-le did not hear.)

Repair the pattern

了 is attached to the stance adverb: 仿佛 evaluates the following proposition and cannot take the aspect particle 了. The stance adverb follows the proposition: 仿佛 must precede the proposition it presents as an impression.

他仿佛没有听见。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
