几乎 for Nearness and 似乎 for an Inference in Chinese

几乎 / 似乎 jīhū / sìhū

几乎 says a quantity or event came close to a boundary: almost all, almost none, or nearly happened. 似乎 presents an appearance-based or tentative inference meaning 'it seems.' Both precede what they scope over, but they answer different questions: degree of nearness versus the speaker's confidence in an interpretation.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

几乎 + Quantity / Event; 似乎 + Inferred State or Proposition

Read the structure

几乎 says a quantity or event came close to a boundary: almost all, almost none, or nearly happened. 似乎 presents an appearance-based or tentative inference meaning 'it seems.' Both precede what they scope over, but they answer different questions: degree of nearness versus the speaker's confidence in an interpretation. Keep the model 几乎 + Quantity / Event; 似乎 + Inferred State or Proposition visible while you compare each sentence.

我几乎迟到了。

I was almost late.

Choose the right context

Use 几乎 for a near total, near zero, or narrowly unrealized event. Use 似乎 before a state or proposition inferred from available signs. Use the contrast to separate measurable closeness from epistemic uncertainty.

这里几乎没有人。

There is almost nobody here.

Respect the boundary

Do not use 似乎 merely to mean almost. Do not insert 了 between either adverb and its predicate. Do not assume 几乎 always means an event failed; context can describe an almost complete quantity.

我几乎了迟到。

(I was almost late.)

Repair the pattern

Aspect splits 几乎 from its predicate: 几乎 must scope over the predicate 迟到; 了 follows the completed event expression. Aspect splits 似乎 from its state: 似乎 directly introduces the inferred state and cannot be separated from it by 了.

我几乎迟到了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

03 / EXAMPLES

我几乎迟到了。

Wǒ jīhū chídào le.

I was almost late.

这里几乎没有人。

Zhèlǐ jīhū méiyǒu rén.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Use 几乎 for a near total, near zero, or narrowly unrealized event.
  • Use 似乎 before a state or proposition inferred from available signs.
  • Use the contrast to separate measurable closeness from epistemic uncertainty.

Do not use it when

  • Do not use 似乎 merely to mean almost.
  • Do not insert 了 between either adverb and its predicate.
  • Do not assume 几乎 always means an event failed; context can describe an almost complete quantity.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

我几乎了迟到。

我几乎迟到了。

Aspect splits 几乎 from its predicate

几乎 must scope over the predicate 迟到; 了 follows the completed event expression.

他似乎了很累。

他似乎很累。

Aspect splits 似乎 from its state

似乎 directly introduces the inferred state and cannot be separated from it by 了.

我几乎了迟到。

Wǒ jīhū le chídào.

Put 了 after 迟到, not after 几乎.

他似乎了很累。

Tā sìhū le hěn lèi.

Do not put 了 between 似乎 and its state.

06 / PRACTICE

Which sentence uses 几乎 / 似乎 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

08 / QUESTIONS

几乎 for Nearness and 似乎 for an Inference Questions

Does 几乎 imply the event did not happen?

Often with a bounded event, but not always. 几乎所有人 describes a near total rather than a failed event.

How is 似乎 different from 仿佛?

Both can mark appearance or inference. 仿佛 also commonly introduces an as-if comparison; 似乎 is a neutral tentative inference.
