一会儿…一会儿… presents two actions or states as alternating over a period, not happening simultaneously. Read the structure
一会儿…一会儿… presents two actions or states as alternating over a period, not happening simultaneously. Put one marker directly before each alternative, with a shared subject normally placed before the first marker. 时而…时而… is a compact alternative for similar alternation, but neither frame by itself specifies an exact schedule. Keep the model Subject + 一会儿 + A，一会儿 + B visible while you compare each sentence.
最近天气一会儿冷，一会儿热。

Choose the right context
Describe two actions that repeatedly alternate over a period. Describe a state that changes back and forth between two alternatives. Put one 一会儿 directly before each alternating member.
他一会儿看书，一会儿写字。
He alternates between reading and writing.
Respect the boundary
Do not use it for two actions happening simultaneously; use 一边…一边… for that relation. Do not confuse the paired frame with a single duration phrase such as 等一会儿. Do not place the second 一会儿 after the predicate it introduces.
最近天气一会儿一会儿冷，热。
(Recently the weather alternates between cold and hot.)
Repair the pattern
Both markers stacked before the first alternative: Each 一会儿 must introduce one alternative. Put the first before 冷 and the second before 热. Second marker placed after its predicate: The second marker belongs before the second alternating action: 一会儿跳舞. Postposing it changes the structure into a duration-like phrase.
最近天气一会儿冷，一会儿热。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
