MODEL

Subject + 一时 + A + 一时 + B

Read the structure

The paired frame 一时…一时… presents two states, actions, or trends alternating across successive periods. Each 一时 introduces one member, and the members usually contrast in a parallel form. It resembles 一会儿… 时而…, but often suits broader fluctuations whose phases are not measured as short literal moments. Keep the model Subject + 一时 + A + 一时 + B visible while you compare each sentence.

With age, one's health is good at times and bad at others.

Choose the right context

Describe a condition that shifts back and forth over time. Contrast two recurring states or trends in parallel. Present unstable health, mood, output, or another fluctuating condition.

This company's output rises at times and falls at others.

Respect the boundary

Do not use the frame for two simultaneous actions. Do not omit the second 一时 when marking both phases. Do not place the shared subject inside the two paired markers.

(At times good health at times bad.)

Repair the pattern

The subject splits the paired frame: The shared subject 身体 precedes the complete paired frame; each 一时 directly introduces its state. The second phase lacks its marker: Alternation requires the second 一时 before the contrasting phase 下降.

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
