一边…一边… for Simultaneous Actions in Chinese
一边…一边…
一边…一边… links two actions performed by the same subject at the same time. Put the subject before the first 一边, and place one 一边 directly before each verb phrase: 他一边走路,一边唱歌. The paired markers cannot sit inside either verb-object phrase or reverse around an explicit subject.

MODEL
Subject + 一边 + VP1,一边 + VP2
Read the structure
一边…一边… links two actions performed by the same subject at the same time. Put the subject before the first 一边, and place one 一边 directly before each verb phrase: 他一边走路,一边唱歌. The paired markers cannot sit inside either verb-object phrase or reverse around an explicit subject. Keep the model Subject + 一边 + VP1,一边 + VP2 visible while you compare each sentence.
他一边走路,一边唱歌。
He sings while walking.
Choose the right context
Describe two actions by one subject happening at the same time. Place one 一边 before each complete verb phrase. State the shared subject once before the first 一边 when it is explicit.
哥哥一边看电视,一边吃东西。
Older brother eats while watching television.
Respect the boundary
Do not put the first 一边 before an explicit shared subject. Do not insert 一边 between a verb and its object. Do not use this action pattern merely to list two unrelated facts.
他一边听音乐,写一边字。
(He writes while listening to music.)
Repair the pattern
Second 一边 inserted between a verb and its object: The second 一边 must precede the complete verb phrase 写字. It cannot split the verb 写 from its object 字. 一边 inserted between a verb and its object: 一边 must precede the complete verb phrase 听音乐. It cannot split the verb 听 from its object 音乐.
他一边听音乐,一边写字。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

一边…一边… for Simultaneous Actions Questions
Where does the subject go with 一边…一边…?
Put the shared subject before the first 一边: 他一边听音乐,一边写字. It normally applies to both actions.
Do I need two 一边 markers?
Yes for this basic paired construction. Put one directly before each verb phrase so the two simultaneous actions are structurally clear.
