MODEL

Subject + 异常 + Adjective / State

Read the structure

异常 functions as a relatively formal degree adverb meaning abnormally or exceptionally. It precedes a gradable adjective or state, often implying deviation from an expected norm, as in 异常寒冷. It cannot follow the adjective, take an aspect particle, or directly modify a concrete noun without 的. The context supplies the expected norm being exceeded. Keep the model Subject + 异常 + Adjective / State visible while you compare each sentence.

今天天气异常寒冷。

The weather is exceptionally cold today.

Choose the right context

Describe an unusually high degree: 异常寒冷。 Highlight deviation from a normal state. Use it in reports or formal descriptions.

会场里异常安静。

The venue is unusually quiet.

Respect the boundary

Do not place 异常 after the adjective it intensifies. Do not attach 了 to 异常. Do not put it directly before a concrete noun as an adjectival modifier.

今天天气异寒冷常。

(The weather is abnormally cold split today.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed degree adverb is split: 异常 is one fixed degree adverb and must remain together before 寒冷. 了 is attached to the degree adverb: 异常 is an adverb and cannot take the aspect particle 了.

今天天气异常寒冷。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
