忽A忽B: Abrupt Alternation in Chinese

忽A忽B hū A hū B

忽A忽B describes abrupt alternation between two contrasting states, often in sound, speed, light, temperature, or emotion. Each 忽 directly precedes one parallel quality, presenting unpredictable switching rather than gradual change. The pattern requires two interpretable contrasts and cannot be reduced to a single occurrence or used with mismatched grammatical forms.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 忽 + Quality A + 忽 + Quality B

Read the structure

忽A忽B describes abrupt alternation between two contrasting states, often in sound, speed, light, temperature, or emotion. Each 忽 directly precedes one parallel quality, presenting unpredictable switching rather than gradual change. The pattern requires two interpretable contrasts and cannot be reduced to a single occurrence or used with mismatched grammatical forms. Keep the model Subject + 忽 + Quality A + 忽 + Quality B visible while you compare each sentence.

屋里的说话声忽高忽低。

The voices in the room rose and fell abruptly.

Choose the right context

Describe a sound abruptly changing between high and low. Portray speed or intensity switching unpredictably. Present alternating states as sudden rather than regular.

他十分紧张,心跳忽快忽慢。

He was very nervous, and his heartbeat alternated unpredictably between fast and slow.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit the second 忽. Do not place both instances of 忽 before A. Do not use the pattern for a smooth gradual change or a regularly scheduled alternation.

屋里的声音忽高低。

(The sound was suddenly high low.)

Repair the pattern

The second 忽 is omitted: Each alternating state requires its own marker: 忽高 and 忽低. Both markers are stacked before the first quality: The balanced order is 忽 + A + 忽 + B, not 忽忽 + A + B.

屋里的声音忽高忽低。
