在 / 正在: Ongoing Actions in Chinese
在 and 正在 mark an action in progress — what someone is doing right now. 在 is the everyday form; 正在 stresses that it is happening at this very moment, and 呢 often closes the sentence for a softer tone. This progressive is a moving action, unlike 着, which marks a lasting state.
STRUCTURE
Subject + (正)在 + Verb + Object (+ 呢)
When to use 在 — and when not
Use it when
- Saying what is happening now: 我在吃饭 / 他正在睡觉。
- Answering "what are you doing?": 你在做什么? — 我在看书。
- Adding 呢 for a natural, softer tone: 我在工作呢。
Don't use it when
- A lasting state or posture — that is 着: 门开着 (the door is open), not 门在开。
- Habitual or completed actions — 每天 routines and finished events don't use 在: 我每天跑步 / 我吃了饭。
- Adjective conditions: 在 marks actions, not states — 我很累, not 我在累。
Right vs. wrong
我吃饭在。
我在吃饭。
在 placed after the verb
在 is a pre-verb marker for the progressive, so it stands before the verb: 在吃饭. Placing it after the verb phrase is ungrammatical.
灯在开。
灯开着。
Using 在 for a state that needs 着
A light that stays on is a lasting state, not an action in progress. Continuous states take verb + 着 (开着), while 在 would mean someone is in the act of switching it on.

在 / 正在: Ongoing Actions FAQ
What is the difference between 在 and 正在?
Both mark an action in progress. 在 is the everyday form (我在吃饭); 正在 emphasizes "right at this moment" (我正在吃饭呢). In speech you'll use 在 most of the time.
What is the difference between 在 and 着?
在 marks a moving action happening now (我在开门 — I'm opening the door). 着 marks a resulting state that lasts (门开着 — the door is open). One is the action, the other the state it leaves.
Do I need 呢 at the end?
No, it's optional. 我在工作 and 我在工作呢 both mean "I'm working"; 呢 just makes it sound softer and more conversational.
