Read the structure
向来 describes a stable habit or disposition across the past up to the reference time. It normally follows the subject and precedes the predicate, often with 都 in affirmative statements or 不 in negative ones. Unlike 从来, 向来 does not require negation; the two adverbs cannot be stacked together. Keep the model Subject + 向来 + (都 / 不) + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
他向来都听父母的话。
He has always listened to his parents.
Choose the right context
Describe a long-standing habit or character trait. Use 向来都 for an affirmative consistent pattern. Use 向来不 for a long-standing negative habit.
她向来不迟到。
She has never been late as a matter of habit.
Respect the boundary
Do not use it for one isolated event. Do not stack 向来 and 从来. Do not place 向来 after the completed predicate.
王老师重视实践向来。
(Teacher Wang values practice always.)
Repair the pattern
向来 follows the habitual predicate: 向来 is a time-frequency adverb and must precede the predicate it frames. Two habitual adverbs are stacked: 向来 and 从来 compete for the same habitual-time slot; choose the one that matches the intended framing.
王老师向来重视实践。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
