通常: Usually as a General Pattern in Chinese
通常
通常 marks what normally or generally happens, without claiming that it happens every time. It usually appears before the predicate and after the topic or subject. Because it is an adverb rather than an event verb, it cannot take aspect particles such as 了 or be placed after the action it modifies.

01 / PATTERN
See the Structure
MODEL
Subject + 通常 + Predicate
Read the structure
通常 marks what normally or generally happens, without claiming that it happens every time. It usually appears before the predicate and after the topic or subject. Because it is an adverb rather than an event verb, it cannot take aspect particles such as 了 or be placed after the action it modifies. Keep the model Subject + 通常 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
李经理通常很早到公司。
Manager Li usually arrives at the office early.
Choose the right context
Describe a usual schedule or method. State a general tendency with possible exceptions. Compare what normally happens with an unusual occasion.
我通常坐地铁上班。
I usually take the subway to work.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 通常 for a single completed event. Do not attach 了 to 通常. Do not place it after the main action.
我通常了坐地铁上班。
(I usually-le take the subway to work.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to a frequency adverb: 通常 is a frequency adverb and cannot take the aspect particle 了. The frequency adverb splits the verb-object phrase: 通常 must precede the predicate and cannot split 坐地铁.
我通常坐地铁上班。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
