从来: Never Up to the Reference Time in Chinese
从来
从来 commonly combines with 不 or 没有 to mean never throughout the relevant time span. It stands before the negated predicate: 从来不 for habits or enduring choices, and 从来没 for events that have never occurred. Affirmative literary uses exist, so this lesson focuses on the productive negative pattern. The time span may be lifelong or contextually limited.

Read the structure
从来 commonly combines with 不 or 没有 to mean never throughout the relevant time span. It stands before the negated predicate: 从来不 for habits or enduring choices, and 从来没 for events that have never occurred. Affirmative literary uses exist, so this lesson focuses on the productive negative pattern. The time span may be lifelong or contextually limited. Keep the model Subject + 从来 + 不 / 没(有) + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
他从来不喝酒。
He never drinks alcohol.
Choose the right context
Deny a habitual behavior across all relevant time with 从来不. Deny any past occurrence with 从来没(有). Emphasize that there has been no exception up to now.
我从来没去过那里。
I have never been there.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 从来 after the negator. Do not put the negator inside a verb-object phrase. Do not label rare affirmative forms wrong; this card teaches the common negative pattern.
他不从来喝酒。
(He not never drinks.)
Repair the pattern
从来 follows the negator: In the ordinary negative pattern, 从来 precedes 不 or 没有 and scopes over the whole negated predicate. Negation splits the verb-object phrase: 不 belongs before the verb 喝 and cannot split 喝酒.
他从来不喝酒。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
