Asyndetic Clause Groups Without Overt Connectives in Chinese

不带关联词语的句群 bù dài guānlián cíyǔ de jùqún

An asyndetic clause group links two or more complete clauses through meaning, order, and context rather than an overt connective. The relation may be sequence, cause, contrast, explanation, or accumulation. Because no marker names that relation, clause order and shared topic must make the intended reading recoverable for the listener or reader.

MODEL

Clause 1,Clause 2;Clause 3。Without an Overt Connective

Read the structure

An asyndetic clause group links two or more complete clauses through meaning, order, and context rather than an overt connective. The relation may be sequence, cause, contrast, explanation, or accumulation. Because no marker names that relation, clause order and shared topic must make the intended reading recoverable for the listener or reader. Keep the model Clause 1,Clause 2;Clause 3。Without an Overt Connective visible while you compare each sentence.

天亮了,街上的人多了起来。

Day broke, and more people appeared on the street.

Choose the right context

Create concise narration with an obvious event sequence. Place mutually explaining or accumulating clauses side by side. Let a shared topic and context make the relation recoverable.

他不说,我也明白。

He did not say it, but I understood anyway.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit a required predicate from one of the clauses. Do not juxtapose clauses whose logical relation remains ambiguous. Do not assume removing a connective preserves every original emphasis or register.

天气变冷,大家外套。

(The weather turned cold; everyone coats.)

Repair the pattern

The second clause lacks a predicate: Without a connective, each unit still needs a recoverable clause structure; 大家外套 lacks a predicate. A time word is stranded after the completed predicate: 以后 must frame the later action before its predicate here, not remain after the completed clause.

天气变冷,大家穿上外套。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

天亮了,街上的人多了起来。

Tiān liàng le, jiē shang de rén duō le qǐlai.

Day broke, and more people appeared on the street.

他不说,我也明白。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Create concise narration with an obvious event sequence.
  • Place mutually explaining or accumulating clauses side by side.
  • Let a shared topic and context make the relation recoverable.

Do not use it when

  • Do not omit a required predicate from one of the clauses.
  • Do not juxtapose clauses whose logical relation remains ambiguous.
  • Do not assume removing a connective preserves every original emphasis or register.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

天气变冷,大家外套。

天气变冷,大家穿上外套。

The second clause lacks a predicate

Without a connective, each unit still needs a recoverable clause structure; 大家外套 lacks a predicate.

会议结束,大家回家以后。

会议结束,大家以后回家。

A time word is stranded after the completed predicate

以后 must frame the later action before its predicate here, not remain after the completed clause.

天气变冷,大家外套。

Tiānqì biàn lěng, dàjiā wàitào.

Without a connective, each unit still needs a recoverable clause structure; 大家外套 lacks a predicate.

会议结束,大家回家以后。

Huìyì jiéshù, dàjiā huí jiā yǐhòu.

以后 must frame the later action before its predicate here, not remain after the completed clause.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

2. Choose the correction

08 / QUESTIONS

Asyndetic Clause Groups Without Overt Connectives Questions

Does an asyndetic group have no logical relation?

It still has a semantic relation. The difference is that order, context, and lexical meaning convey it without an overt connective.

Can I always delete a connective?

No. Deletion may make the relation ambiguous or change emphasis. Use the unmarked form only when the intended link remains clear.
