甚至
甚至 adds a more surprising or extreme item than what came before. It may introduce a noun phrase or an entire clause; when the focus is a noun, 连…也/都 often makes the scope explicit. The added item must be genuinely stronger on the context's scale, not merely another equal example.

Read the structure
甚至 adds a more surprising or extreme item than what came before. It may introduce a noun phrase or an entire clause; when the focus is a noun, 连…也/都 often makes the scope explicit. The added item must be genuinely stronger on the context's scale, not merely another equal example. Keep the model Statement, 甚至 + (连) + Focus + 也 / 都 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
他什么都不会，甚至连自己的名字也不会写。
He can do nothing; he cannot even write his own name.
Choose the right context
Add the most surprising member of a list. Escalate from a general statement to an extreme case. Use 甚至连…也/都 to focus an unexpected participant.
她病得很严重，甚至要做手术。
She is very ill and may even need surgery.
Respect the boundary
Do not put 甚至 after the extreme item. Do not use it for two equal alternatives. Do not omit 也 or 都 when using the full 连 focus frame.
她要做手术甚至。
(She needs surgery even.)
Repair the pattern
甚至 follows the extreme item: 甚至 must introduce the escalated item or clause; it cannot trail it. 也 is missing from the 连 focus frame: The complete emphatic focus frame is 连 + focus + 也/都 + predicate.
她甚至要做手术。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
