Basic Degree Adverbs in Chinese

很/太/非常/最 hěn / tài / fēi cháng / zuì

Degree adverbs stand before an adjectival predicate or another gradable expression. 很 often creates a neutral positive description, 非常 marks a clearly high degree, 最 selects the highest member of a comparison set, and 太 usually presents an excessive degree, often with sentence-final 了.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 很/非常/太/最 + Adjectival Predicate

Read the structure

Degree adverbs stand before an adjectival predicate or another gradable expression. 很 often creates a neutral positive description, 非常 marks a clearly high degree, 最 selects the highest member of a comparison set, and 太 usually presents an excessive degree, often with sentence-final 了. Keep the model Subject + 很/非常/太/最 + Adjectival Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

今天很热。

It is hot today.

Choose the right context

Use 很 before an adjective for a neutral descriptive statement. Use 非常 when the degree is explicitly strong. Use 最 when one member ranks highest in an understood set.

我非常喜欢这本书。

I like this book very much.

Respect the boundary

Do not place a degree adverb after the adjective it modifies. Do not combine 最 with 比 in the same basic comparison predicate. Do not use 太 as a neutral equivalent of 很 when no excess or reaction is intended.

今天热很。

(It is very hot today.)

Repair the pattern

Degree adverb follows the adjective: Degree adverb 很 must precede the adjectival predicate 热 in this basic degree construction. Superlative and 比 comparison are stacked: 比 introduces a two-item comparison, while 最 requires a highest member within a set; this basic sentence cannot use both.

今天很热。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

今天很热。

It is hot today.

今天

Subject

This part occupies the Subject position in the model pattern.

很/非常/太/最

This part occupies the 很/非常/太/最 position in the model pattern.

Adjectival Predicate

This part occupies the Adjectival Predicate position in the model pattern.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

今天很热。

jīn tiān hěn rè 。

It is hot today.

我非常喜欢这本书。

wǒ fēi cháng xǐ huan zhè běn shū 。

I like this book very much.

她最喜欢蓝色。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Use 很 before an adjective for a neutral descriptive statement.
  • Use 非常 when the degree is explicitly strong.
  • Use 最 when one member ranks highest in an understood set.

Do not use it when

  • Do not place a degree adverb after the adjective it modifies.
  • Do not combine 最 with 比 in the same basic comparison predicate.
  • Do not use 太 as a neutral equivalent of 很 when no excess or reaction is intended.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 很/太/非常/最 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 他比我最高。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 很/太/非常/最.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 很/太/非常/最. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Basic Degree Adverbs Questions

Does 很 always mean very?

Not always. Before a simple adjectival predicate, it often makes a neutral description without strong emphasis.

Must 太 take 了?

No, but 太…了 is the common complete pattern for reacting to an excessive or striking degree.
