格外、极、极其: High Degree in Chinese
格外 / 极 / 极其
格外, 极, and 极其 intensify an adjectival predicate to a very high degree. 格外 often highlights an exceptional contrast with the usual situation, while 极其 is formal and emphatic. These adverbs normally stand before the property they modify; 极 may also occur after an adjective in fixed patterns. Register determines the best choice.

Read the structure
格外, 极, and 极其 intensify an adjectival predicate to a very high degree. 格外 often highlights an exceptional contrast with the usual situation, while 极其 is formal and emphatic. These adverbs normally stand before the property they modify; 极 may also occur after an adjective in fixed patterns. Register determines the best choice. Keep the model Subject + Degree adverb + Adjectival predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
老师今天格外开心。
The teacher is exceptionally happy today.
Choose the right context
Highlight an unusually strong quality with 格外. Use 极其 for formal, emphatic evaluation. Use 极 before an adjectival predicate in concise written descriptions.
这个问题极其复杂。
This problem is extremely complex.
Respect the boundary
Do not insert 是 between the subject and an adjectival predicate. Do not move 格外 or 极其 after the adjective. Do not stack several synonymous degree adverbs without a contrastive purpose.
老师今天开心格外。
(The teacher today happy exceptionally.)
Repair the pattern
The degree adverb follows its predicate: 格外 is an adverb and must precede the adjectival predicate 开心. The degree adverb is placed before the subject: 极其 belongs inside the predicate, after the subject 这个问题 and directly before 复杂.
老师今天格外开心。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
