HSK 3 Noun Classifiers in Chinese

把 / 行 / 架 / 群 / 束 / 双 / 台 / 张 / 支 / 只 / 种 bǎ / háng / jià / qún / shù / shuāng / tái / zhāng / zhī / zhǐ / zhǒng

These classifiers connect a number or demonstrative to nouns selected by shape, grouping, pairing, function, or conventional usage. For example, 张 goes with flat objects, 双 with pairs, 群 with groups, and 台 or 架 with many machines. Selection is lexical, so one classifier cannot replace every other classifier.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Number / Demonstrative + Classifier + Noun

Read the structure

These classifiers connect a number or demonstrative to nouns selected by shape, grouping, pairing, function, or conventional usage. For example, 张 goes with flat objects, 双 with pairs, 群 with groups, and 台 or 架 with many machines. Selection is lexical, so one classifier cannot replace every other classifier. Keep the model Number / Demonstrative + Classifier + Noun visible while you compare each sentence.

桌上有两台电脑。

There are two computers on the desk.

Choose the right context

Choose a classifier that conventionally matches the noun. Place it between the number or demonstrative and the noun. Use 种 when counting kinds rather than individual objects.

她买了一双鞋。

She bought a pair of shoes.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit the classifier in an ordinary numbered noun phrase. Do not use a human classifier for an inanimate object. Do not treat 只 as the adverb meaning only in this noun-phrase slot.

办公室有三位电脑。

(The office has three computers.)

Repair the pattern

A person classifier is used for a machine: 位 counts people respectfully; a computer conventionally takes 台 here. The classifier is placed after the noun: The classifier must stand between the number and the noun.

办公室有三台电脑。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 把 / 行 / 架 / 群 / 束 / 双 / 台 / 张 / 支 / 只 / 种 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1

07 / APPLY

08 / QUESTIONS

HSK 3 Noun Classifiers Questions

Why can one noun take different classifiers?

Different classifiers can highlight different units or perspectives. The intended unit and conventional collocation determine the choice.

Are 把 and 只 always classifiers?

No. 把 also marks a disposal construction, and 只 can be an adverb meaning only. Position and the following noun identify the classifier use.
