Choosing 层, 封, 件, 条, and 位 in Chinese

层 / 封 / 件 / 条 / 位 céng / fēng / jiàn / tiáo / wèi

These classifiers pair with different noun types: 层 counts floors or layers, 封 letters, 件 bounded matters or items, 条 long or itemized things, and 位 people respectfully. They occupy the ordinary classifier slot between a number or demonstrative and the noun. Their pairings are lexical, so one classifier cannot freely replace another.

See the Structure

MODEL

Number / Demonstrative + Classifier + Noun

Read the structure

These classifiers pair with different noun types: 层 counts floors or layers, 封 letters, 件 bounded matters or items, 条 long or itemized things, and 位 people respectfully. They occupy the ordinary classifier slot between a number or demonstrative and the noun. Their pairings are lexical, so one classifier cannot freely replace another. Keep the model Number / Demonstrative + Classifier + Noun visible while you compare each sentence.

她住在第二层。

She lives on the second floor.

Choose the right context

Use 层 for floors or layers and 封 for letters. Use 件 for matters, clothes, or bounded items and 条 for long or itemized nouns. Use 位 before a person when respectful reference is intended.

我收到一封信。

I received a letter.

Respect the boundary

Do not replace a noun's conventional classifier with any item from this set. Do not put the classifier after the noun. Do not use 位 for inanimate objects.

我写了一条信。

(I wrote a letter.)

Repair the pattern

A letter takes the wrong classifier: Letters conventionally take 封, not 条. The respectful human classifier modifies an object: 位 counts people respectfully and cannot classify books.

我写了一封信。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

她住在第二层。

She lives on the second floor.

Number / Demonstrative

This part occupies the Number / Demonstrative position in the model pattern.

住在

Classifier

This part occupies the Classifier position in the model pattern.

第二

Noun

This part occupies the Noun position in the model pattern.

Number / Demonstrative

This part occupies the Number / Demonstrative position in the model pattern.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

她住在第二层。

Tā zhù zài dì-èr céng.

She lives on the second floor.

我收到一封信。

Wǒ shōudào yì fēng xìn.

I received a letter.

门口有两位老师。

Ménkǒu yǒu liǎng wèi lǎoshī.

There are two teachers at the entrance.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Use 层 for floors or layers and 封 for letters.
  • Use 件 for matters, clothes, or bounded items and 条 for long or itemized nouns.
  • Use 位 before a person when respectful reference is intended.

Do not use it when

  • Do not replace a noun's conventional classifier with any item from this set.
  • Do not put the classifier after the noun.
  • Do not use 位 for inanimate objects.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

我写了一条信。

我写了一封信。

A letter takes the wrong classifier

Letters conventionally take 封, not 条.

桌上有三位书。

桌上有三本书。

The respectful human classifier modifies an object

位 counts people respectfully and cannot classify books.

我写了一条信。

Wǒ xiě le yì tiáo xìn.

Use 一封信.

桌上有三位书。

Zhuō shàng yǒu sān wèi shū.

位 classifies people, not books.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 层 / 封 / 件 / 条 / 位 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 桌上有三位书。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 层 / 封 / 件 / 条 / 位.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 层 / 封 / 件 / 条 / 位. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Choosing 层, 封, 件, 条, and 位 Questions

Can 件 count clothes?

Yes. 件 commonly counts individual garments as well as matters and some bounded items. The specific noun still determines whether 件 is the established pairing.

Is 位 always required for people?

No. 个 is neutral and broad; 位 adds respectful reference and must still suit the context. Titles, names, and other noun-phrase shapes may use different patterns.
