Specialized Noun Classifiers 打, 袋, 根, 卷, 棵, and 批 in Chinese

打 / 袋 / 根 / 卷 / 棵 / 批 dǎ / dài / gēn / juǎn / kē / pī

These classifiers package nouns by conventional unit or shape: 打 counts dozens, 袋 bags, 根 long narrow objects, 卷 rolls, 棵 rooted plants, and 批 batches or groups handled together. They occupy the classifier slot between a number or demonstrative and the noun. Selection depends on the noun and intended unit, not English translation alone.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Number or demonstrative + specialized classifier + noun

Read the structure

These classifiers package nouns by conventional unit or shape: 打 counts dozens, 袋 bags, 根 long narrow objects, 卷 rolls, 棵 rooted plants, and 批 batches or groups handled together. They occupy the classifier slot between a number or demonstrative and the noun. Selection depends on the noun and intended unit, not English translation alone. Keep the model Number or demonstrative + specialized classifier + noun visible while you compare each sentence.

我们买了两打铅笔。

We bought two dozen pencils.

Choose the right context

Use 打 for a dozen and 袋 for contents counted by bags. Use 根 for long narrow objects, 卷 for rolls, and 棵 for rooted plants. Use 批 for goods, people, or work treated as one batch.

院子里有三棵树。

There are three trees in the yard.

Respect the boundary

Do not replace every specialized classifier with 个 in careful quantity phrases. Do not put the classifier after the noun. Do not choose only by physical shape when the noun has a conventional classifier-unit pairing.

我们买了铅笔两打。

(We bought two dozen pencils.)

Repair the pattern

The classifier follows its noun: A counted noun phrase places number and classifier before the noun: 两打铅笔. A plant takes the long-object classifier instead of the plant classifier: Rooted plants conventionally take 棵. 根 may count long narrow objects or roots, but not a whole tree here.

我们买了两打铅笔。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

Wǒmen mǎi le liǎng dǎ qiānbǐ.

We bought two dozen pencils.

院子里有三棵树。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

  • Use 打 for a dozen and 袋 for contents counted by bags.
  • Use 根 for long narrow objects, 卷 for rolls, and 棵 for rooted plants.
  • Use 批 for goods, people, or work treated as one batch.

Do not use it when

  • Do not replace every specialized classifier with 个 in careful quantity phrases.
  • Do not put the classifier after the noun.
  • Do not choose only by physical shape when the noun has a conventional classifier-unit pairing.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

The classifier follows its noun

A counted noun phrase places number and classifier before the noun: 两打铅笔.

院子里有三根树。

院子里有三棵树。

A plant takes the long-object classifier instead of the plant classifier

Rooted plants conventionally take 棵. 根 may count long narrow objects or roots, but not a whole tree here.

我们买了铅笔两打。

Wǒmen mǎi le qiānbǐ liǎng dǎ.

Put 两打 before 铅笔.

院子里有三根树。

Yuànzi li yǒu sān gēn shù.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 打 / 袋 / 根 / 卷 / 棵 / 批 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 院子里有三根树。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 打 / 袋 / 根 / 卷 / 棵 / 批.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 打 / 袋 / 根 / 卷 / 棵 / 批. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Specialized Noun Classifiers 打, 袋, 根, 卷, 棵, and 批 Questions

Can 个 replace these classifiers?

个 may occur colloquially with some nouns, but it cannot preserve meanings such as a dozen, a bagful, a roll, or a batch. Use the specialized classifier when that unit matters.

What is the difference between 根 and 棵?

根 counts long narrow objects such as ropes or sticks and can count roots themselves. 棵 counts whole rooted plants such as trees and cabbages.
