Event and Portion Classifiers 顿, 口, and 眼 in Chinese
顿/口/眼
顿 counts meals and episodes such as scoldings, 口 counts mouthfuls or bites as well as family members in set phrases, and 眼 counts quick acts of looking. Their meaning comes from the event or portion being bounded, so they cannot freely replace general event classifier 次 or noun classifier 个.

MODEL
Verb + Number + 顿/口/眼; Number + Classifier + Noun
Read the structure
顿 counts meals and episodes such as scoldings, 口 counts mouthfuls or bites as well as family members in set phrases, and 眼 counts quick acts of looking. Their meaning comes from the event or portion being bounded, so they cannot freely replace general event classifier 次 or noun classifier 个. Keep the model Verb + Number + 顿/口/眼; Number + Classifier + Noun visible while you compare each sentence.
我们吃了一顿饭。
We ate a meal.
Choose the right context
Use 顿 to count meals after 吃 or as a meal noun classifier. Use 口 to count a mouthful of food or drink. Use 眼 after 看 to count a brief look.
他喝了一口水。
He took a sip of water.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 顿 to count an unbounded amount of food itself. Do not use 口 as the general classifier for cups or bottles. Do not use 眼 for reading an entire long text from beginning to end.
他喝了口一水。
(He took a sip of water.)
Repair the pattern
Number and classifier reversed: The verbal measure phrase must retain number-before-classifier order 一口 before the measured object 水. Verbal classifier separated from the verb phrase: 一眼 is an intact number-classifier phrase and cannot wrap around the object 这本书.
他喝了一口水。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
