Evaluative High Degree with 够……的 in Chinese

够……的 gòu…de

The evaluative frame 够…的 places 够 before an adjective to emphasize that a property reaches a notably high degree, often with the speaker's attitude. Sentence-final 的 is common but can be omitted in some contexts. This pattern differs from 够 meaning sufficient before a noun or verb, so the adjective and evaluative context are essential.

MODEL

够 + Adjective + 的

Read the structure

The evaluative frame 够…的 places 够 before an adjective to emphasize that a property reaches a notably high degree, often with the speaker's attitude. Sentence-final 的 is common but can be omitted in some contexts. This pattern differs from 够 meaning sufficient before a noun or verb, so the adjective and evaluative context are essential. Keep the model 够 + Adjective + 的 visible while you compare each sentence.

今天够热的。

It is really hot today.

Choose the right context

Emphasize that a property is strikingly strong. Add a personal evaluation to an adjective predicate. Comment on difficulty, heat, distance, or another scalar quality.

这条路够远的,我们坐车吧。

This road is quite long; let us take a vehicle.

Respect the boundary

Do not place 够 after the adjective in this frame. Do not move 的 before the adjective. Do not confuse evaluative degree with sufficient quantity.

这本书难的够。

(This book difficult de enough.)

Repair the pattern

The adjective precedes 够: Evaluative 够 directly precedes the adjective 难, with 的 at the end of the frame. The degree phrase is scrambled: 真 may precede the complete predicate 够热的; 的 cannot stand before 够.

这本书够难的。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
