Read the structure

Standalone 不得了 is a fixed evaluation or alarm expression meaning that something is extraordinary, serious, or disastrous. It can praise an impressive result or introduce urgent bad news. This use differs from the degree complement in 高兴得不得了, where 得 connects a predicate to an extreme-degree complement. Keep the model 不得了(了),Clause / Subject + 真是 + 不得了 visible while you compare each sentence.

你又考了第一名,真是不得了!

You came first again; that is amazing!

Choose the right context

React to an impressive achievement. Signal that a serious problem has occurred. Open an urgent exclamation before explaining the situation.

不得了了,房间里进水了。

This is terrible; water is getting into the room.

Respect the boundary

Do not break the fixed three-character sequence. Do not insert a degree adverb inside 不得了. Do not confuse standalone 不得了 with the complement pattern Predicate + 得不得了.

你又考了第一名,真是不很得了!

(You came first; really not very de-liao.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed expression is interrupted: 不得了 is a fixed unit here and cannot contain 很 between 不 and 得. The characters of the fixed expression are scattered: The complete exclamation 不得了 must remain intact before the clause it introduces.

你又考了第一名,真是不得了!

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
