MODEL
Adjective / Mental-state verb + 得 + 不得了
Read the structure
得不得了 follows an adjective or suitable mental-state expression to present its degree as extremely high. It behaves as a postverbal degree complement, so 得 belongs between the predicate and 不得了. The expression is emphatic and conversational; neutral descriptions that need precision are usually better with an ordinary degree adverb. Keep the model Adjective / Mental-state verb + 得 + 不得了 visible while you compare each sentence.
今天外面热得不得了。
It is unbelievably hot outside today.
Choose the right context
Emphasize extreme heat or cold: 今天热得不得了。 Describe an intense feeling: 她听到消息后高兴得不得了。 Give an emphatic evaluation in conversation: 这道题难得不得了。
她听到这个消息后高兴得不得了。
She was extremely happy after hearing the news.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 不得了 before the adjective as though it were a normal degree adverb. Do not omit 得 between the predicate and the complement. Do not use the emphatic expression when an exact measurement or restrained formal description is required.
今天外面热不得了。
(It is hot unbelievably outside today.)
Repair the pattern
The required complement marker 得 is omitted: 不得了 is a degree complement here, and 得 must link it to the adjective 热. 不得了 is incorrectly placed before the adjective: In this construction, 不得了 is post-predicate: adjective plus 得 plus 不得了. It is not a regular preverbal adverb.
今天外面热得不得了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
