Read the structure
The scope adverb 大都 says that most members of a contextually relevant group satisfy the following predicate. It occurs after the plural or generic subject and before the predicate. Unlike 都, it allows exceptions; unlike 大多数, it is not itself a noun phrase and cannot directly occupy a subject or object slot. Keep the model Plural/Generic Subject + 大都 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
这里的学生大都住在学校。
Most students here live at school.
Choose the right context
Use 大都 after a plural subject to mean most of them. Use it with a generic group before a shared tendency. Use 大都 when exceptions remain possible.
参赛者大都很年轻。
Most contestants are young.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 大都 inside the subject noun phrase. Do not attach aspect marking to 大都. Do not use 大都 as a standalone noun phrase meaning the majority.
这里的大都学生住在学校。
(Most students here live at school.)
Repair the pattern
Scope adverb splits demonstrative and noun: 大都 is a clause adverb after the complete subject 这里的学生; it cannot occur inside that noun phrase. Perfective marker attaches to the scope adverb: 大都 carries majority scope but no aspect; 了 marks the predicate 回家.
这里的学生大都住在学校。
