MODEL

Read the structure

Mandarin question words can express indefinite meanings without asking a question. With 都 they can cover every possible value, and under negation with 也 or 都 they can mean nobody, nothing, or nowhere. The question word remains in its normal grammatical position; particles and scope determine the non-question reading. Keep the model Question Word + 都/也; 不/没 + Question Word visible while you compare each sentence.

谁都可以来。

Anyone can come.

Choose the right context

Use 谁都 plus a predicate to mean everyone when context supplies the domain. Use 什么也 plus negation to mean nothing. Use a repeated question word in matching clauses to mean whatever or whoever.

我什么也没买。

I did not buy anything.

Respect the boundary

Do not add 吗 to a clause intended as an indefinite statement. Do not omit the scope word 都 or 也 in a negative nothing or nobody pattern. Do not move the question word to the front when its grammatical role belongs after the verb.

我也什么没买。

(I did not buy anything.)

Repair the pattern

Scope adverb placed before the question word: In the negative-indefinite pattern, 什么 precedes scope adverb 也, which then stands before 没 and the verb. Scope adverb duplicated: One 也 supplies the negative-indefinite scope after 什么; repeating it in the same slot is redundant.

我什么也没买。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

你想吃什么就吃什么。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Use 谁都 plus a predicate to mean everyone when context supplies the domain.

  • Do not omit the scope word 都 or 也 in a negative nothing or nobody pattern.
  • Do not move the question word to the front when its grammatical role belongs after the verb.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

In the negative-indefinite pattern, 什么 precedes scope adverb 也, which then stands before 没 and the verb.

我什么也也没买。

08 / QUESTIONS

Non-Question Uses of Wh-Words Questions

How can I tell whether 谁 asks a question?

Look for scope words and sentence function. 谁都… normally states an unrestricted set rather than requesting a name.

Can 都 replace 也 after 什么?

Often yes in negative indefinite patterns, though the preferred choice varies by construction and emphasis.
