Plenty with 有的是 in Chinese

有的是 yǒu de shì

有的是 states that someone or somewhere has plenty of the named people, things, time, or resources. The abundant item can follow the expression, as in 我们有的是时间, or move before it when already topical, as in 水果有的是. This fixed abundance reading differs from ordinary 有的 meaning some and from simple possession.

Read the structure

有的是 states that someone or somewhere has plenty of the named people, things, time, or resources. The abundant item can follow the expression, as in 我们有的是时间, or move before it when already topical, as in 水果有的是. This fixed abundance reading differs from ordinary 有的 meaning some and from simple possession. Keep the model Possessor or Place + 有的是 + Noun / Noun + 有的是 visible while you compare each sentence.

别着急,我们有的是时间。

Do not rush; we have plenty of time.

Choose the right context

Emphasize that a resource is available in large quantity. Reassure someone that there is enough time or material. Place a known abundant item before 有的是 for topical emphasis.

这儿水果有的是,你多拿一点儿。

There is plenty of fruit here; take some more.

Respect the boundary

Do not scramble the fixed sequence 有的是. Do not insert the abundant noun inside the fixed expression. Do not confuse this expression with 有的 meaning some members of a group.

我们的是有时间。

(Ours is have time.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed expression is reversed: The abundance expression has the fixed order 有 + 的 + 是 before its following noun. The abundant noun splits the expression: The noun 书 follows the intact expression 有的是 rather than splitting it.

我们有的是时间。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
