大A大B dà A dà B

大A大B is a four-character frame found in established expressions such as 大吃大喝 and 大手大脚. Repeated 大 can strengthen degree, combine two related actions or qualities, and add evaluative coloring. Meanings may be partly lexicalized, so learners should acquire attested combinations rather than freely inserting any two words.

MODEL

大 + A + 大 + B

Read the structure

大A大B is a four-character frame found in established expressions such as 大吃大喝 and 大手大脚. Repeated 大 can strengthen degree, combine two related actions or qualities, and add evaluative coloring. Meanings may be partly lexicalized, so learners should acquire attested combinations rather than freely inserting any two words. Keep the model 大 + A + 大 + B visible while you compare each sentence.

他们在饭店大吃大喝。

They ate and drank lavishly at the restaurant.

Choose the right context

Use an established 大A大B expression to intensify paired actions. Describe a conspicuous paired quality or manner. Add an evaluative tone carried by a conventional four-character unit.

这件衣服大红大绿的。

This piece of clothing is glaringly red and green.

Respect the boundary

Do not assume every pair of words can enter the frame. Do not reverse the repeated 大 and the A or B slots. Do not derive the full meaning from 大 alone when the expression is lexicalized.

他们吃大喝大。

(They eat big drink big.)

Repair the pattern

The repeated marker is placed after both slots: The conventional frame places each 大 before its A or B slot. The second slot is inserted before its required 大: The second half must keep the order 大 + B rather than B + 大.

他们大吃大喝。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
