半A半B: Partly One, Partly Another in Chinese
半A半B
半A半B combines two contrasting or complementary qualities to describe a mixed, uncertain, or intermediate state. Each 半 directly precedes one parallel element, and the two slots should belong to compatible grammatical and semantic categories. The pattern is often lexicalized, so established combinations such as 半真半假 and 半信半疑 are safest.

MODEL
半 + Quality A + 半 + Quality B
Read the structure
半A半B combines two contrasting or complementary qualities to describe a mixed, uncertain, or intermediate state. Each 半 directly precedes one parallel element, and the two slots should belong to compatible grammatical and semantic categories. The pattern is often lexicalized, so established combinations such as 半真半假 and 半信半疑 are safest. Keep the model 半 + Quality A + 半 + Quality B visible while you compare each sentence.
他说的话半真半假,不能全信。
What he said was partly true and partly false, so it cannot be fully trusted.
Choose the right context
Describe information as partly true and partly false. Express a mixed mental state such as partial belief and doubt. Characterize an intermediate state with two balanced qualities.
听到这个消息,我一直半信半疑。
I remained half convinced and half doubtful after hearing the news.
Respect the boundary
Do not place both instances of 半 before the first element. Do not omit the second 半. Do not combine unrelated A and B elements that cannot form a coherent mixed state.
他说的话半半真假。
(His words half-half true false.)
Repair the pattern
Both 半 markers are stacked before A: One 半 must introduce each parallel quality: 半真 and 半假. The second 半 is omitted: The balanced construction requires 半 before both 信 and 疑.
他说的话半真半假。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
