不怎么 for a Low Degree or Low Frequency in Chinese
不怎么
不怎么 lowers the degree, frequency, or extent of a following predicate: not very, not much, or not often. It is a statement, not a 怎么 question, because 不 and 怎么 form one adverbial unit before the predicate. Context determines whether the reading concerns intensity, comfort, concern, or repeated action.

Read the structure
不怎么 lowers the degree, frequency, or extent of a following predicate: not very, not much, or not often. It is a statement, not a 怎么 question, because 不 and 怎么 form one adverbial unit before the predicate. Context determines whether the reading concerns intensity, comfort, concern, or repeated action. Keep the model Subject + 不怎么 + Verb / Adjective visible while you compare each sentence.
他不怎么在乎这些小事。
He does not care much about these small matters.
Choose the right context
Soften a negative evaluation before an adjective. State that an action happens rarely or to a limited extent. Keep 不怎么 together immediately before the predicate.
我最近不怎么出门。
I have not gone out much recently.
Respect the boundary
Do not reverse 不怎么 into 怎么不 unless asking a reason question. Do not insert aspect inside 不怎么. Do not use it when a categorical 不 or 没有 is required.
他不很怎么忙。
(He is not very busy.)
Repair the pattern
Another degree negation splits the unit: 不怎么 is the complete low-degree adverbial and directly modifies 忙. Aspect is inserted inside the adverbial and predicate: 不怎么 must directly precede the predicate 舒服.
他不怎么忙。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
不怎么 for a Low Degree or Low Frequency Questions
How is 不怎么 different from 不?
不怎么 usually weakens a degree or frequency; plain 不 can make a more categorical denial. The surrounding predicate and time expression determine whether the reading concerns intensity or frequency.
Is 怎么 here a question word?
No. In the fixed adverbial 不怎么, the combination modifies the following predicate and does not ask how or why.
