MODEL
Subject + 只好 + verb phrase
Read the structure
只好 introduces the action a speaker accepts because circumstances leave no better practical alternative. It precedes the resulting choice and often follows a clause explaining the constraint. The expression conveys reluctant necessity, not a command, moral duty, or logical certainty, and its subject still performs the selected action. Keep the model Subject + 只好 + verb phrase visible while you compare each sentence.
没有公共汽车了,我们只好走回家。
There were no buses, so we had no choice but to walk home.
Choose the right context
Present a reluctant choice forced by circumstances. Put 只好 before the action that remains possible. State the limiting circumstance first when the reason is not already clear.
他今天很忙,只好明天再来。
He is busy today, so he can only come tomorrow.
Respect the boundary
Do not use it for a freely preferred option without a constraint. Do not use it to issue a direct order to another person. Do not insert 得 between 只好 and its following verb phrase.
太晚了,我只好得回家。
(It is late, so I have no choice but to go home.)
Repair the pattern
Inserting 得 after 只好: 只好 directly modifies the selected action. The particle 得 cannot connect it to 回家. Reversing the fixed expression: 只好 is a fixed modal adverbial unit. Reversing it to 好只 does not express constrained choice.
太晚了,我只好回家。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
只好 for the Only Acceptable Option Questions
How is 只好 different from 必须?
只好 presents the remaining option under an unfavorable constraint and often carries reluctance. 必须 states necessity or obligation without requiring that same resigned evaluation.
Does 只好 always need an explicit reason clause?
No. The constraint can come from the surrounding conversation or situation, but the utterance still presupposes that better alternatives are unavailable.
