不妨 (bùfáng): Might as Well in Chinese

不妨 is a modal adverb used to make a mild, considered suggestion: someone might as well try an action because it causes no harm or is worth considering. It normally appears before the suggested verb phrase and often sounds more measured or formal than 可以. It offers an option rather than granting permission.

STRUCTURE

(Subject +) 不妨 + Suggested Action

When to use 不妨 — and when not

Use it when

  • To offer a low-pressure suggestion: 你不妨先休息一下。
  • To propose trying an option: 我们不妨换个角度考虑。
  • In measured advice or formal discussion: 有疑问时,不妨查阅原始资料。

Don't use it when

  • To grant or ask for permission; 可以 is usually the relevant modal for permission.
  • Do not place 不妨 after the action it is meant to suggest.
