一…也/都不/没: Not Even One in Chinese

一…也/都不/没… yī...yě/dōu bù/méi...

一…也/都不/没 places a minimal quantity before 也 or 都 and a negative predicate to mean not even one or none at all. The focused noun phrase must remain intact, and the negator must stay before the verb rather than splitting a verb-result complement or the numeral-classifier-noun sequence.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 一 + Measure word + Noun + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Predicate

Read the structure

一…也/都不/没 places a minimal quantity before 也 or 都 and a negative predicate to mean not even one or none at all. The focused noun phrase must remain intact, and the negator must stay before the verb rather than splitting a verb-result complement or the numeral-classifier-noun sequence. Keep the model Subject + 一 + Measure word + Noun + 也 / 都 + 不 / 没 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

我一本书也没买。

I did not buy even one book.

Choose the right context

Emphasize zero quantity: 一本书也没买。 Deny even one occurrence or participant. Use 不 for general or future negation and 没 for unrealized events.

今天一个学生都没迟到。

Not a single student was late today.

Respect the boundary

Do not split the numeral-classifier-noun phrase. Do not put the negator inside a result complement. Do not use this pattern when you merely mean not all.

我一本也书没买。

(I one-volume even book did not buy.)

Repair the pattern

The numeral-classifier-noun phrase is split: 一本书 must remain a complete focused noun phrase before 也. The negator splits a result complement: 没 must precede the inseparable resultative predicate 见到, not split it.

我一本书也没买。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
