未必: Not Necessarily in Chinese

未必 wèibì

未必 weakens a claim by saying that it is not necessarily true. It stands before the predicate or proposition whose certainty is questioned. Unlike 一定不, it does not assert the opposite; it leaves open both possibilities. A following 都 can scope over alternatives, but 不 should not be inserted inside 未必. The claim remains possible; the speaker only rejects certainty.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 未必 + Predicate

Read the structure

未必 weakens a claim by saying that it is not necessarily true. It stands before the predicate or proposition whose certainty is questioned. Unlike 一定不, it does not assert the opposite; it leaves open both possibilities. A following 都 can scope over alternatives, but 不 should not be inserted inside 未必. The claim remains possible; the speaker only rejects certainty. Keep the model Subject + 未必 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

贵的东西未必都好。

Expensive things are not necessarily all good.

Choose the right context

Challenge an overconfident conclusion politely. Say a predicted result is possible but not guaranteed. Qualify a generalization before the predicate.

他明天未必会来。

He may not necessarily come tomorrow.

Respect the boundary

Do not use 未必 when you mean definitely not. Do not split the fixed word as 未不必. Do not place 未必 after the proposition it evaluates.

他明天未不必会来。

(He tomorrow not-necessarily will come.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed adverb is split: 未必 is one fixed adverb; do not insert 不 between its two syllables. 未必 is placed after the predicate: 未必 must precede the predicate whose certainty it limits.

他明天未必会来。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 未必 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 这个办法有效未必。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 未必.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 未必. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

未必: Not Necessarily Questions

Does 未必 mean definitely not?

No. It means ‘not necessarily,’ so the statement may still turn out to be true.

What can follow 未必?

A verb, modal phrase, or adjectival predicate can follow it: 未必来, 未必会来, 未必有效.
