非A非B: Neither Category Applies in Chinese

非A非B fēi A fēi B

非A非B rejects two candidate categories in a balanced formal expression, often before identifying a third possibility or limiting the relationship. Each 非 directly negates one parallel noun or category. The pattern does not coordinate ordinary predicate negation, and the two slots should be comparable labels rather than unrelated actions or descriptions.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 非 + Noun A + 非 + Noun B

Read the structure

非A非B rejects two candidate categories in a balanced formal expression, often before identifying a third possibility or limiting the relationship. Each 非 directly negates one parallel noun or category. The pattern does not coordinate ordinary predicate negation, and the two slots should be comparable labels rather than unrelated actions or descriptions. Keep the model Subject + 非 + Noun A + 非 + Noun B visible while you compare each sentence.

这场悲剧的制造者非你非我,另有其人。

The person responsible for this tragedy is neither you nor me, but someone else.

Choose the right context

Reject two possible identities before naming another. Define a relationship as belonging to neither of two categories. Use a concise formal balanced classification.

我们非敌非友,只是见过一面。

We are neither enemies nor friends; we have only met once.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit the second 非. Do not use 不 in one half and 非 in the other. Do not fill A and B with unrelated nonparallel constituents.

我们非敌友,只是见过一面。

(We are not enemy friend.)

Repair the pattern

The second negating marker is omitted: Each parallel category needs its own 非: 非敌 and 非友. Two different negators break the balanced frame: The target category-rejection frame requires the parallel form 非A非B, not mixed 非A不B.

我们非敌非友,只是见过一面。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

08 / QUESTIONS

非A非B: Neither Category Applies Questions

How is 非A非B different from 既不A也不B?

非A非B is compact and often classifies nouns or identities. 既不A也不B is more productive for predicates.

Must A and B be opposites?

Not necessarily, but they must be comparable candidate categories within the same classification.
