MODEL

一 + A + 一 + B

Read the structure

一A一B is a semi-fixed four-character frame in expressions such as 一问一答, 一举一动, and 一草一木. Depending on the lexical pair, it can present alternating paired actions, every relevant detail, or two mutually related sides. The whole expression should be learned with its conventional meaning and syntactic behavior. Keep the model 一 + A + 一 + B visible while you compare each sentence.

老师和学生一问一答。

The teacher and student exchanged questions and answers.

Choose the right context

Present paired actions in an established four-character expression. Refer comprehensively to small details with a conventional unit. Describe mutually related sides through a fixed lexical pair.

这里的一草一木,我都很熟悉。

I know every plant and tree here very well.

Respect the boundary

Do not place the repeated 一 after the A or B slot. Do not assume any two words form an accepted expression. Do not force one single interpretation onto every lexicalized 一A一B unit.

老师和学生一问答一。

(The teacher and student one ask answer one.)

Repair the pattern

The second 一 is moved after its slot: The repeated frame requires 一 before both A and B. The first lexical slot is detached from its marker: The conventional expression keeps the complete order 一 + 草 + 一 + 木.

08 / QUESTIONS

The Four-character Frame 一A一B Questions

Does 一 always mean exactly one in this frame?

Not necessarily. In many conventional expressions it helps build a paired or exhaustive four-character unit rather than counting two isolated objects.

Can learners create new 一A一B expressions freely?

Some analogy is possible, but conventional collocation and meaning matter. Use attested combinations first.
