If It Had Not Been For in Chinese
要不是
要不是 introduces a counterfactual condition: an actual fact is presented as crucial, and the second clause states what would have happened without it. That alternative result often contains 就, 也, or 会. It differs from 要是, which gives an open ‘if’; the negative component 不是 cannot be removed or separated.

MODEL
Read the structure
要不是 introduces a counterfactual condition: an actual fact is presented as crucial, and the second clause states what would have happened without it. That alternative result often contains 就, 也, or 会. It differs from 要是, which gives an open ‘if’; the negative component 不是 cannot be removed or separated. Keep the model 要不是 + Crucial actual fact, Subject + 就 / 也 / 会 + Counterfactual result visible while you compare each sentence.
If the teacher had not helped me, I could not have finished this article.
Choose the right context
Identify a real fact whose absence would change the outcome. Construct a past counterfactual condition. Pair the condition with 就, 也, or 会 in the unreal result.
Had he not delayed returning, he would not have missed the interview.
Respect the boundary
Do not remove 不 from the fixed connector. Do not leave out the crucial actual fact. Do not describe an open future condition as settled counterfactual fact.
(If-it-had-not-been-for-le the teacher helped me, I could not finish.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to the counterfactual connector: 要不是 is an invariant connector and cannot take aspect 了. The preventing fact is missing: 要不是 must introduce the fact or person that prevented the unreal result.
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
