Read the structure
幸亏...要不然... expresses relief that a helpful fact prevented an undesirable result. 幸亏 introduces what saved the situation, and 要不然 introduces the counterfactual outcome that would likely have occurred without it. The pattern therefore combines evaluation, causation, and an unrealized negative consequence. Keep the model 幸亏 + Help, 要不然 + Avoided bad result visible while you compare each sentence.
幸亏你提醒我，要不然我就忘了。

Choose the right context
Express relief: 幸亏你提醒我，要不然我就忘了。 Credit a person or event with preventing a bad outcome. Make the avoided consequence explicit after 要不然.
幸亏我们早点儿出发，要不然就迟到了。
Luckily we left early, otherwise we would have been late.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 幸亏 for a cause the speaker evaluates as unfortunate. Do not present the actual result after 要不然; it introduces the avoided alternative. Do not leave either the helpful fact or counterfactual result incomplete.
幸亏，要不然我就迟到了。
(Luckily, otherwise I would be late.)
Repair the pattern
The helpful fact is omitted: 幸亏 must identify the helpful fact that prevented the negative result. The counterfactual result is omitted: 要不然 must introduce the undesirable outcome that was avoided.
幸亏你来接我，要不然我就迟到了。
