01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 为 + Purpose / Cause + Verb or Adjective

Read the structure

The preposition 为 introduces a purpose, cause, or matter that motivates a following action or feeling. It normally precedes that noun phrase and the main predicate, as in 为健康锻炼 and 为成绩高兴. This lesson excludes 为 introducing a beneficiary and the formal copular reading pronounced wéi. Keep the model Subject + 为 + Purpose / Cause + Verb or Adjective visible while you compare each sentence.

我每天为健康锻炼。

I exercise every day for my health.

Choose the right context

State the purpose motivating an action. Name the cause of an emotion or response. Use a compact, often neutral or written prepositional phrase.

大家为他的成绩高兴。

Everyone is happy about his result.

Respect the boundary

Do not place 为 after the purpose noun phrase. Do not split 为 from the noun phrase it introduces. Do not confuse this preposition with copular 为 pronounced wéi.

我每天健康为锻炼。

(I health for exercise every day.)

Repair the pattern

The purpose phrase precedes its preposition: 为 must stand before the purpose noun phrase and the following predicate. The predicate splits 为 from its cause: 为 directly introduces the cause phrase; 高兴 follows the complete phrase.

我每天为健康锻炼。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
