因为...所以 (Because... So) in Chinese

因为…所以 yīnwèi...suǒyǐ

因为...所以... expresses cause and result: 因为下雨,所以我没去 (because it rained, so I didn't go). Unlike English, Chinese happily uses both words in one sentence. You can drop one — 因为 or 所以 alone also works — but the cause clause comes first.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

因为 + Cause, (所以) + Result clause

Read the structure

因为...所以... expresses cause and result: 因为下雨,所以我没去 (because it rained, so I didn't go). Unlike English, Chinese happily uses both words in one sentence. You can drop one — 因为 or 所以 alone also works — but the cause clause comes first. Keep the model 因为 + Cause, (所以) + Result clause visible while you compare each sentence.

因为下雨,所以我没去。

Because it rained, I didn't go.

Choose the right context

Stating a cause then its result: 因为很累,所以我早点睡了。 Using just one of the pair: 我没去,因为下雨了。 所以 alone to give the result: 下雨了,所以我没去。

因为很累,所以我早点睡了。

Because I was tired, I went to bed early.

Respect the boundary

Thinking you can't use both — Chinese allows 因为...所以 together, unlike English "because...so". Putting the result before the cause in the paired form — cause comes first: 因为..., 所以...。 Using 所以 to mean "because" — 所以 introduces the result, 因为 the cause.

所以下雨,因为我没去。

(Because it rained, I didn't go.)

Repair the pattern

Swapping 因为 and 所以: 因为 marks the cause and 所以 the result. Swapping them reverses the logic — the rain is the cause, so it takes 因为, and the not-going is the result, so it takes 所以. 所以 tacked onto the end of the cause clause: 所以 opens the result clause, so it belongs at the start of the second clause, before 我没去 — not tacked onto the end of the cause clause.

因为下雨,所以我没去。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

因为下雨,所以我没去。

Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ méi qù.

Because it rained, I didn't go.

因为很累,所以我早点睡了。

Yīnwèi hěn lèi, suǒyǐ wǒ zǎodiǎn shuì le.

Because I was tired, I went to bed early.

我没去,因为下雨了。

Wǒ méi qù, yīnwèi xià yǔ le.

I didn't go because it rained.

下雨了,所以我没去。

Xià yǔ le, suǒyǐ wǒ méi qù.

It rained, so I didn't go.

因为他生病了,所以没来上课。

Yīnwèi tā shēngbìng le, suǒyǐ méi lái shàngkè.

Because he was sick, he didn't come to class.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Stating a cause then its result: 因为很累,所以我早点睡了。
  • Using just one of the pair: 我没去,因为下雨了。
  • 所以 alone to give the result: 下雨了,所以我没去。

Do not use it when

  • Thinking you can't use both — Chinese allows 因为...所以 together, unlike English "because...so".
  • Putting the result before the cause in the paired form — cause comes first: 因为..., 所以...。
  • Using 所以 to mean "because" — 所以 introduces the result, 因为 the cause.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

所以下雨,因为我没去。

因为下雨,所以我没去。

Swapping 因为 and 所以

因为 marks the cause and 所以 the result. Swapping them reverses the logic — the rain is the cause, so it takes 因为, and the not-going is the result, so it takes 所以.

因为下雨所以,我没去。

因为下雨,所以我没去。

所以 tacked onto the end of the cause clause

所以 opens the result clause, so it belongs at the start of the second clause, before 我没去 — not tacked onto the end of the cause clause.

所以下雨,因为我没去。

Suǒyǐ xià yǔ, yīnwèi wǒ méi qù.

Cause takes 因为, result takes 所以: 因为下雨,所以我没去。

因为下雨所以,我没去。

Yīnwèi xià yǔ suǒyǐ, wǒ méi qù.

所以 opens the result clause: 因为下雨,所以我没去。

因为下雨,但是我没去。

Yīnwèi xià yǔ, dànshì wǒ méi qù.

For cause–result use 所以, not 但是: 因为下雨,所以我没去。

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 因为…所以 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 因为下雨所以,我没去。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 因为…所以.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 因为…所以. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

因为...所以 (Because... So) Questions

Can I use 因为 and 所以 in the same sentence?

Yes — Chinese uses both together: 因为累,所以睡了. This differs from English, where "because... so..." sounds wrong. You may also drop one of them.

Which clause comes first?

The cause (因为) normally comes first, then the result (所以). You can also state the result first and add 因为 after: 我没去,因为下雨。

Can I drop 因为 or 所以?

Yes. 我没去,因为下雨 (只用 因为) and 下雨了,所以我没去 (只用 所以) both work. Using both just makes the cause–result link explicit.
