因为...所以 (Because... So) in Chinese

因为...所以... expresses cause and result: 因为下雨,所以我没去 (because it rained, so I didn't go). Unlike English, Chinese happily uses both words in one sentence. You can drop one — 因为 or 所以 alone also works — but the cause clause comes first.

STRUCTURE

When to use 因为…所以 — and when not

Use it when

  • Stating a cause then its result: 因为很累,所以我早点睡了。
  • Using just one of the pair: 我没去,因为下雨了。
  • 所以 alone to give the result: 下雨了,所以我没去。

Don't use it when

  • Thinking you can't use both — Chinese allows 因为...所以 together, unlike English "because...so".
  • Putting the result before the cause in the paired form — cause comes first: 因为..., 所以...。
  • Using 所以 to mean "because" — 所以 introduces the result, 因为 the cause.

Right vs. wrong

因为 marks the cause and 所以 the result. Swapping them reverses the logic — the rain is the cause, so it takes 因为, and the not-going is the result, so it takes 所以.

所以 tacked onto the end of the cause clause

所以 opens the result clause, so it belongs at the start of the second clause, before 我没去 — not tacked onto the end of the cause clause.

因为...所以 (Because... So) FAQ

Can I use 因为 and 所以 in the same sentence?

Yes — Chinese uses both together: 因为累,所以睡了. This differs from English, where "because... so..." sounds wrong. You may also drop one of them.

Which clause comes first?

The cause (因为) normally comes first, then the result (所以). You can also state the result first and add 因为 after: 我没去,因为下雨。

Can I drop 因为 or 所以?

Yes. Using both just makes the cause–result link explicit.
