Unmarked Compact Clause Relations in Chinese

无标记紧缩复句 wú biāojì jǐnsuō fùjù

Some compact Mandarin clause pairs omit an overt connective because their conditional, contrastive, or permissive relation is recoverable from meaning and parallel structure. Examples such as 你有事你先走 remain multi-clause in interpretation despite having no explicit 如果 or 就. This option is licensed by discourse clarity, not free deletion of every connective.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Clause 1 + Clause 2, with the relation inferred from meaning

Read the structure

Some compact Mandarin clause pairs omit an overt connective because their conditional, contrastive, or permissive relation is recoverable from meaning and parallel structure. Examples such as 你有事你先走 remain multi-clause in interpretation despite having no explicit 如果 or 就. This option is licensed by discourse clarity, not free deletion of every connective. Keep the model Clause 1 + Clause 2, with the relation inferred from meaning visible while you compare each sentence.

你有事你先走。

If you have something to do, you go first.

Choose the right context

State a compact condition whose result is immediately recoverable. Contrast two parallel reactions without an overt conjunction. Give permission by echoing the addressee's proposed action.

你不怕我怕。

You may not be afraid, but I am.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit words when the clause relation becomes ambiguous. Do not leave either clause without a complete predicate. Do not assume every marked complex sentence has a natural unmarked version.

你有事你先。

(You have business, you first.)

Repair the pattern

The second clause lacks its predicate: Even without a connective, the second clause still needs a complete predicate such as 先走. The contrasting clause is incomplete: The intended parallel contrast requires the second predicate 怕 after its subject 我.

你有事你先走。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

你有事你先走。

If you have something to do, you go first.

Clause 1

This part occupies the Clause 1 position in the model pattern.

有事

Clause 2, with the relation inferred from meaning

This part occupies the Clause 2, with the relation inferred from meaning position in the model pattern.

Clause 1

This part occupies the Clause 1 position in the model pattern.

Clause 2, with the relation inferred from meaning

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

你有事你先走。

Nǐ yǒu shì nǐ xiān zǒu.

If you have something to do, you go first.

你不怕我怕。

Nǐ bù pà wǒ pà.

You may not be afraid, but I am.

你想去你去。

Nǐ xiǎng qù nǐ qù.

If you want to go, then go.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • State a compact condition whose result is immediately recoverable.
  • Contrast two parallel reactions without an overt conjunction.
  • Give permission by echoing the addressee's proposed action.

Do not use it when

  • Do not omit words when the clause relation becomes ambiguous.
  • Do not leave either clause without a complete predicate.
  • Do not assume every marked complex sentence has a natural unmarked version.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

你有事你先。

你有事你先走。

The second clause lacks its predicate

Even without a connective, the second clause still needs a complete predicate such as 先走.

你不怕我。

你不怕我怕。

The contrasting clause is incomplete

The intended parallel contrast requires the second predicate 怕 after its subject 我.

你有事你先。

Nǐ yǒu shì nǐ xiān.

Even without a connective, the second clause still needs a complete predicate such as 先走.

你不怕我。

Nǐ bù pà wǒ.

The intended parallel contrast requires the second predicate 怕 after its subject 我.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 无标记紧缩复句 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 你不怕我。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 无标记紧缩复句.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 无标记紧缩复句. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Unmarked Compact Clause Relations Questions

Are these sentences missing conjunctions by mistake?

No. Their semantic relation is recoverable without an overt marker, so Mandarin can use the compact unmarked form.

Can any conjunction be deleted?

No. Omission is acceptable only when the relation and clause boundaries remain clear in context.
