A coordinate sentence group links multiple complete sentences without making one globally subordinate to another. The discourse relation may be parallel, sequential, progressive, alternative, explanatory, or summarizing. Connectives can make the relation explicit, but topic continuity, order, and interpretation also help readers recover how the sentences function together.

MODEL
Sentence 1。Sentence 2。… + Coordinate Discourse Relation
Read the structure
A coordinate sentence group links multiple complete sentences without making one globally subordinate to another. The discourse relation may be parallel, sequential, progressive, alternative, explanatory, or summarizing. Connectives can make the relation explicit, but topic continuity, order, and interpretation also help readers recover how the sentences function together. Keep the model Sentence 1。Sentence 2。… + Coordinate Discourse Relation visible while you compare each sentence.
Day broke. The streetlights went out. People gradually left home.
Choose the right context
Organize several complete sentences as parallel or sequential discourse. Add an explanation, escalation, alternative, or summary across sentence boundaries. Use connectives when the intended relation would otherwise be unclear.
Many people attended. In short, the event was popular.
Respect the boundary
Do not classify every adjacent sentence as one coherent group. Do not confuse a multi-sentence group with one complex sentence. Do not label a relation without evidence from meaning, order, or connective expressions.
(Day broke. Then next people went out.)
Repair the pattern
Two connective slots are stacked for one transition: 然后 and 接着 compete to mark the same single sequential transition here; use one. A summarizer is inserted before the information it summarizes: A summarizing expression must look back to developed material and introduce a supported synthesis.
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Coordinate Relations Across Sentence Groups Questions
Are connectives mandatory?
No. Some relations are inferred from order and meaning, but an explicit marker helps when the relation could be ambiguous.
