所: Object-Focused Relative Expression in Chinese
所
所 appears before a transitive verb in formal object-focused relative expressions such as 我所做的事 and 据我所知. The understood object is supplied by the following noun or context. 所 must stay before the verb, cannot take aspect marking, and requires a verb capable of relating to that understood object.

MODEL
Subject + 所 + Verb + 的 + Noun / 所 + Verb
Read the structure
所 appears before a transitive verb in formal object-focused relative expressions such as 我所做的事 and 据我所知. The understood object is supplied by the following noun or context. 所 must stay before the verb, cannot take aspect marking, and requires a verb capable of relating to that understood object. Keep the model Subject + 所 + Verb + 的 + Noun / 所 + Verb visible while you compare each sentence.
你所做的每件事我都支持。
I support everything you do.
Choose the right context
Form a formal relative modifier: 我所写的文章。 Use fixed frames such as 据我所知 or 众所周知. Focus the object affected by the following transitive verb.
据我所知,这件事不是真的。
As far as I know, this matter is not true.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 所 after the verb. Do not attach 了 to 所. Do not use it before a verb with no possible understood object in this pattern.
这是他所了写的小说。
(This is the novel he suo-le wrote.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to the structural particle: 所 is a structural marker before the verb and cannot take the aspect particle 了. 所 follows the relative verb: The fixed relative order is subject + 所 + verb + 的 + noun.
这是他所写的小说。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with 所.
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with 所. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
所: Object-Focused Relative Expression Questions
Is 所 required in every relative clause?
No. It is a formal object-focused option; ordinary verb + 的 relatives often omit it.
What is omitted after the verb?
The object is understood from the following head noun or discourse context.
