Pronoun Reference Across a Sentence Group in Chinese

用代词复指 yòng dàicí fùzhǐ

Pronoun reference introduces a person, object, place, or topic with a fuller noun phrase and then uses a personal or demonstrative pronoun to keep that referent active across later clauses. 他她它, 这种, 那, and related forms reduce repetition, but each pronoun must still point to a clear compatible antecedent. Longer passages may alternate pronoun types as discourse focus changes.

这个学生来自英国。他现在在中国学习中文。

This student is from Britain. He is now studying Chinese in China.

Choose the right context

Use a personal pronoun after introducing a person clearly. Use a demonstrative pronoun or demonstrative noun phrase to resume a thing, kind, or place. Alternate pronouns only when every referent remains easy to identify.

网络越来越重要。它让生活变得更方便。

The internet is increasingly important. It makes life more convenient.

Respect the boundary

Do not use a pronoun whose number conflicts with its only antecedent. Do not insert an extra pronoun when the clause already has its subject or object. Do not let two possible antecedents make the reference irrecoverably ambiguous.

Repair the pattern

A singular antecedent is resumed by an unexplained plural pronoun: With only one student introduced, the resumptive personal pronoun must remain singular unless a new group is supplied. An extra pronoun duplicates the clause argument: 我 already supplies the subject and 那里 the location, so an extra 它 has no grammatical role in the clause.

08 / QUESTIONS

Pronoun Reference Across a Sentence Group Questions

Must every later sentence repeat the full noun?

No. Once a referent is clear, an appropriate pronoun can maintain it across clauses. Repeating the full noun remains possible when clarity or contrast requires it.

Can 这 or 那 refer to a whole earlier idea?

Yes. Demonstratives can resume a thing, place, kind, or broader proposition when context makes the intended referent clear. The page avoids treating every occurrence as the same subtype.
