一…比一…: Progressive Comparison in Chinese

一……比一…… yī...bǐ yī...

The pattern 一…比一… compares successive members of the same category and says each one exceeds the previous one in some quality. MODEL

一 + Measure word (+ Noun) + 比 + 一 + Measure word (+ Noun) + Adjective

Read the structure

The pattern 一…比一… compares successive members of the same category and says each one exceeds the previous one in some quality. The two compared units normally repeat the same classifier or event noun. The adjective follows the complete comparison; do not insert 更 after 比 or mismatch the paired units. Keep the model 一 + Measure word (+ Noun) + 比 + 一 + Measure word (+ Noun) + Adjective visible while you compare each sentence.

这些球鞋一双比一双好看。

Each pair of these sneakers looks better than the last.

Choose the right context

Describe a sequence that becomes progressively stronger. Compare repeated performances, days, or classified objects. Emphasize that every new member surpasses the preceding one.

他的演出一次比一次精彩。

Each of his performances is more exciting than the previous one.

Respect the boundary

Do not use different classifiers for the paired units. Do not place the adjective before the 比 phrase. Do not add 更 immediately after 比 in this fixed construction.

这些球鞋一双比一件好看。

(Each pair of sneakers is prettier than each item.)

Repair the pattern

The two classifiers do not match: The repeated comparison tracks the same category, so the classifier must match on both sides. The adjective interrupts the comparison: Complete 一天比一天 first; the compared property 暖和 follows the entire frame.

这些球鞋一双比一双好看。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
